The Department of Posts has issued an important clarification regarding age relaxation for candidates seeking compassionate appointment as Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS). This order ensures that eligible candidates from reserved categories receive the age relaxations they are entitled to.
Important Details
| Department | Department of Posts, GDS Section, Ministry of Communications |
|---|---|
| File / Order Number | 17-25/2026-GDS(CG)/Misc |
| Date of Issue | 21-10-2026 |
| Subject | Seeking clarification regarding interpretation of Para 6(a) and Para 8 regarding compassionate engagement of GDS. |
| Applicability | SC/ST, OBC, PwD candidates, and spouses of deceased GDS applying for compassionate engagement. |
What has Changed? (Main Provisions)
Previously, Para 8 of the GDS (Compassionate Engagement) Scheme, 2023 stated that no relaxation in the upper age limit would be allowed for compassionate engagement. This created confusion. The new order clarifies that:
- Para 8 should not be read in isolation. It must be read together with the general GDS (Conduct and Engagement) Rules, 2020.
- Because general GDS rules allow category-wise age relaxations, the Department has decided that these age relaxations will also be admissible for compassionate engagements.
Eligibility and Benefits
- Reserved Categories: Candidates belonging to SC/ST, OBC, and PwD categories are fully eligible to receive category-wise age relaxations when applying for compassionate engagement.
- Spouse of Deceased GDS: As per existing rules, there is no upper age limit applied to the spouse of a deceased GDS seeking compassionate appointment.
Important Points to Know
- This clarification was issued after examining a specific CAT case from the Bihar Circle.
- The order has been approved by the competent authority and circulated to all Chief Postmasters General (CPMGs) across the country.
