Government Business Advisory: Enhancing Security in Government Bank Accounts
The Ministry of Finance, through the Office of the Controller General of Accounts, issued an Office Memorandum on June 12, 2026, to address recent incidents of fraud in government accounts. The advisory highlights the urgent need to strengthen security protocols and communication channels. It was observed that the use of non-official email IDs in government bank accounts has significantly increased the risk of unauthorized changes, compromised communications, and potential financial losses to the government.
To mitigate these risks and enhance operational security, all Ministries and Departments are mandated to enforce the following guidelines:
- Review all current bank account details maintained with accredited or nodal banks.
- Ensure that only official Government domain email IDs are registered with the bank and used for all banking communications.
- Update bank records to accurately reflect the correct mobile number of the authorized official.
- Immediately replace any personal, outdated, or non-Government email IDs with appropriate official ones.
Departments are required to coordinate directly with their respective bank branches to carry out these updates and issue clear instructions to all subordinate and field offices under their control. Intimation of compliance with these security measures must be prioritized and reported back by July 31, 2026.
