Clarification on Notional Increment for Family Pension

Clarification on Notional Increment for Family Pension Calculations

The Department of Posts, under the Ministry of Communications, recently released an official memorandum to address questions surrounding the extension of notional increment benefits for family pension calculations.

Executive Summary of the Memorandum

After consulting with the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT)—the nodal department on service matters—the following key clarifications were made:

  • Specific Purpose of Increment: According to the DoPT Office Memorandum dated 20.05.2025, the granting of a notional increment (falling on either 1st January or 1st July) is strictly intended for calculating the admissible pension.
  • Exclusion of Other Benefits: The memorandum explicitly states that this notional increment should not be factored in when calculating any other pensionary benefits.
  • Final Ruling on Family Pension: Because DoPT has not issued any specific clarifications suggesting otherwise, the benefit of the notional increment cannot be extended for the purpose of calculating family pensions.

This directive, dated 08-06-2026, has been circulated to all Heads of Circles to ensure uniform compliance.
