CBSE Introduces Y-SMILES Health Programme for Adolescents
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), in collaboration with the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), has launched the Y-SMILES (Young - Stronger India through a Million Health-Educated Students) programme. This initiative targets students aged 11 to 17 years across all CBSE schools to help prevent Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) through early screening, health education, and clinical interventions.
Key Highlights of the Programme
- The programme is fully funded by NTPC CSR, meaning there is no financial burden on parents, students, or schools.
- It causes minimal disruption to academics, requiring only 3 to 4 hours over a 3 to 4 week period.
- Student participation is completely voluntary and requires full parental consent at every stage.
- The initiative includes comprehensive health profiling, basic metabolic screening, and non-invasive FibroScan technology to assess liver health.
- High-risk students will receive free clinical linkages, and parents will be provided with personalized health reports in sealed envelopes.
Action Required by Schools
Interested schools need to nominate a teacher to act as a School Nodal Officer to coordinate with the ILBS team. Schools are also responsible for facilitating communication and distributing consent forms to parents. To provide more information, CBSE is hosting an orientation webinar on YouTube Live on May 7, 2026. Participating students, Nodal Teachers, and schools will be awarded Certificates of Appreciation for their involvement.
