Posted On: 11 MAR 2026 | Source: PIB Delhi

A high-level inter-ministerial briefing was recently held at the National Media Centre to address India's response to the evolving situation in West Asia. Senior officials from various ministries, including Petroleum & Natural Gas, External Affairs, and Shipping, detailed the measures being taken to ensure national security and the welfare of Indian citizens.

Key Takeaway: Energy Supplies Remain Secure

Despite regional tensions, India has successfully diversified its crude oil procurement. Approximately 70% of crude imports are now routed outside the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring a stable supply for the nation's daily consumption of 55 lakh barrels.

1. Energy and Fuel Availability

  • Crude Oil: India now imports from about 40 countries. Domestic refineries are operating at very high capacities, some exceeding 100% utilization.
  • LPG Supply: Government measures have increased domestic LPG production by 25%. While some force majeure conditions have affected natural gas, new LNG cargoes are already en route.
  • Price Stability: Despite a 41% rise in global prices since July 2023, the PMUY (Ujjwala) price has fallen by 32% due to government support.

2. Maritime Safety and Trade

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is actively monitoring 28 Indian-flagged vessels currently in the Persian Gulf.

  • A 24-hour control room has been operational since February 28, 2026, to coordinate assistance for seafarers.
  • Port operations across India remain stable, with measures in place to ensure the continuity of EXIM trade.

3. Welfare of the Indian Diaspora

The safety of approximately one crore Indian nationals in GCC countries remains a top priority.

  • Prime Minister Modi has engaged with leaders across the Gulf and West Asian regions to discuss the safety of the diaspora.
  • Indian Missions have assisted stranded tourists and transit passengers in returning home from locations like Riyadh, Jeddah, and Muscat.
  • Students and pilgrims in Iran have been relocated to safer cities outside Tehran.

4. Public Communication & Essential Supplies

The Government has advised States and UTs to take strict action against hoarding and black marketing of essential commodities. To manage demand temporarily, the minimum gap between LPG bookings has been adjusted from 21 to 25 days.
