New Amendment: Inclusion of Military Nursing Service in Ex-servicemen Rules

Published by: Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions
Date: February 9, 2026

The Government of India has officially announced a significant update to the Ex-servicemen (Re-employment in Central Civil Services and Posts) Rules, 1979. Under the powers granted by Article 309 of the Constitution, the President has approved the 2026 Amendment Rules to broaden the scope of who qualifies for re-employment benefits.

The Key Change

The primary focus of this amendment is to update the definition of an "Ex-serviceman." Previously, the rules covered those who served in the regular Army, Navy, or Air Force. The 2026 amendment officially expands this definition to include members of the Military Nursing Service.

"The updated rule now recognizes anyone who has served in any rank—whether as a combatant or non-combatant—in the Regular Army, Navy, Air Force, or the Military Nursing Service of the Indian Union."

Effectivity and Implementation

  • Official Title: Ex-servicemen (Re-employment in Central Civil Services and Posts) Amendment Rules, 2026.
  • Commencement: These rules take effect immediately from the date of their publication in the Official Gazette (February 9, 2026).

This move ensures that the dedicated professionals of the Military Nursing Service receive equal recognition and opportunities for re-employment within central civil services and various government posts.
