CSIR Joins the "Sundays on Cycle" Movement for a Fitter India

The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) is taking proactive steps to implement the national Fit India Movement across its laboratories and institutes. Launched originally in 2019, this movement envisions making fitness an integral part of daily life for all citizens.

The "Sundays on Cycle" (SoC) Initiative

The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports has introduced "Sundays on Cycle" as a flagship campaign to promote cycling, walking, and non-motorized transport. This initiative aligns physical fitness with environmental responsibility.

Impact by the Numbers

The SoC campaign has already seen significant national engagement:

Metric Achievement
Total Participants 2,334,780 citizens
Locations Across India 2,03,356 locations
Editions Completed 57 editions

Creating Cycle-Friendly Campuses

CSIR is encouraging its establishments to transform into "Cycle-Friendly/Non-Motorized Campuses". The proposed measures include:

  • Daily Active Mobility: Promoting walking and cycling within campus grounds.
  • Dedicated Zones: Declaring specific areas as non-motorized, bicycle-friendly zones.
  • Vehicle-Free Hours: Observing designated days or hours where motorized vehicles are restricted.
  • Education: Sensitizing staff on the health, environmental, and productivity benefits of active transport.
"Promoting cycling and foot-walking within these campuses will not only contribute to physical and mental well-being of employees, but will also help reduce carbon emissions and traffic congestion."

Proven Success

The transition to car-free environments is a proven model; for instance, Infosys has successfully maintained car-free campuses since April 2016.
